- Crash/Safety
-
- We all want to
- avoid crashing, but
- unfortunately, many
- of us will be
- unable to avoid a
- collision sometime
- during our life.
-
- During a collision,
- a car rapidly
- changes direction
- and/or speed due to
- impact forces that
- may be several
- hundred times the
- force of gravity.
- Usually, the car is
- brought to a very
- abrupt stop. The
- occupants continue
- moving in the
- original direction
- of travel until
- they are stopped.
- Without seat belts
- or airbags their
- movement will be
- stopped by the
- steering wheel, the
- dashboard, or they
- will fly through
- the windshield and
- be stopped by
- something outside
- the car. An
- occupant that
- braces against the
- impact may do more
- harm than good.
- The impact forces
- are so high that
- locked arm and leg
- joints will result
- in more broken and
- crushed bones.
-
- Seat belts are
- designed to keep
- the occupant moving
- at the same speed
- as the car by
- spreading
- acceleration forces
- over a large area
- of the body. To be
- effective the seat
- belt should fit
- snugly across the
- pelvic bone and
- there should be no
- slack in the
- shoulder strap.
-
- Airbags are very
- effective at
- reducing injury in
- front-end
- collisions because
- they spread the
- force over the
- entire upper body
- and head.
-
- Safety belt use is
- starting to be
- viewed more as a
- social
- responsibility than
- a personal
- decision. Rising
- insurance rates,
- lost days at work,
- and long range
- social programs for
- the disabled are
- some of the costs
- society pays due to
- auto accidents.
- Each year it
- becomes more
- evident that these
- costs can be
- reduced by the use
- of seat belts and
- installation of air
- bags.
-
- For the families
- involved, using
- seat belts can
- literally mean the
- difference between
- life and death for
- their loved ones.
